Self Publishing vs. Traditional

Hello,

I am working on my first novel, and I'm wondering about how to go about getting it published. How do I find a publisher? I've heard that some people have self published... do the books get similar exposure as a traditional publishing? If anyone has information for me, I would so greatly appreciate it!

Hi Susan,
I'm on the same path as you and after a great deal of research i feel the best strategy is epublishing then self-publishing...trad publishing will follow once we're established and "read" which is the most important thing.
I also know from reading a 'writer for writers' that the only real difference is that by taking the initiative yourself you will make more money. There is a veritable publishing and media revolution going on and we have more opportunities to be read than ever before!!

I basically agree with Jenni. Unless you've got an A-list book that a publishing company is very excited about (and willing to put lots of money and pub into), you're probably better off doing your own thing and creating your audience/fan base. Without question, this is true 99% of the time for nonfiction--and is becoming truer for fiction.
